NetTalk Duo

If you have broadband internet service (DSL, cable etc.) you can DRASTICALLY reduce the cost of your phone service.  There are lot of options for VOIP devices (Voice Over Internet Protocol, meaning voice over your internet service). You've probably heard of some of them like MagicJack and even Vonnage. Probably your cable and DSL carrier offer VOIP too. But if you still have a landline and want to greatly reduce the cost, here's a great option: NetTalk Duo

NetTALKNetTALK Duo is a small box that you plug into your internet router or switch, connect any analog phone, power it up, configure it and you have a working telephone. You can get a  new phone number or port your current number to it for a one-time $19.95 fee. 1 year of phone service is $29.99 plus tax.

$29.99 for a year of phone service is spectacular great, especially in comparison to landline costs, even for basic packages! I recently switched my AT&T landline to a NetTalk Duo. My monthly cost was about $45, or about $540 pr year, versus the $29.95 yearly NetTalk Duo cost. There's no comparison. I probably can't describe it better than their web site:

Fire your phone company and start saving money! Make free calls to the U.S. and Canada and ultra low-cost international calls from anywhere in the world, with no contracts and no monthly bills. The netTALK DUO is the original "no computer needed" VoIP telephone device. One year of service is included with the DUO purchase; each additional year is only $29.95 plus tax.

The netTALK DUO is a sleek and versatile VoIP telephone device that connects directly to your router or computer, creating a fax-friendly phone line with all of the same features as your phone company. Enjoy clear call quality and free calling features such as call waiting, conference calling, Enhanced 911, 411 directory assistance, visual voicemail, and a videophone application. Choose a phone number or keep your own. Flat-rate, low cost international call plans are available and the netTALK DUO is supported by live U.S-based, technical support, seven days a week.

To get started, all you need is high-speed internet and a traditional telephone.

Visual Voicemail is voicemail messages that are transcribed into text and emailed to you, and they are pretty cool and useful. You can also talk free to anyone else who has a NetTALK Duo, and that anyone else can be anywhere in the world. They sell it on their website for $49 (as does Walmart), but I have an unopened still-in-the-box NetTALK Duo which we're selling for $34.95 plus $5 shipping. FYI I have been using mine for several months now with NO problems, great voice quality and things like notification of incoming calls, something AT&T did not provide (and caller ID for free!).

The New York Times GADGETWISE covered NetTALK.

Laptop Magazine gives it a 4 stars out of 5 rating.
